Are you into K-pop? You are? Then, have you heard about MOMOLAND recently? Scoring 100 million views for an MV when you’re relatively unknown is a feat in itself, and MOMOLAND certainly proved this to be possible. GREAT!, the mini that the MV has been promoting, may go down as one of K-pop’s interesting successes, but is the group’s third mini-album all that it’s chalked up to be? Is it actually great? It may just be…

GREAT! promo

Bboom Bboom
Boom Boom

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Exploding onto the scene is the first track, “Bboom Bboom“. Reminiscent of European-pop saxy-tracks like “Mr. Saxobeat” and arguably Serebro’s “Mi Mi Mi”, the track puts saxophone, guitar, and dance to good use. Incredibly catchy, with the great styling of random hip-hop breaks, this was bound to make the boom it has done in the Korean-pop music scene.

One may be curious to hear how this track, “Gunggeumhae“, goes. Definitely the slowest track on the mini, but it still incorporates a nice mid-tempo beat and goes from what could have been a ballad to an anthem-like track. Synthy in sound, this is a nice listen, but it feels more filler than it is a stand-out track. I guess you can’t be too curious.

Same Same

Rating: 5 out of 5.

This is, without a doubt, my favorite track on the mini-album and needs no corny introduction. “Same Same” incorporates the use of a light xylophone-like synth over a techno-beat that mixes itself into a light-hearted but absolutely catchy tune. It feels fresh, and the softness that is throughout the song makes you feel the same same as the feelings felt in its lyrics.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Flying into the final original track on the record, “Fly” is an mid-tempo pop song fit for the summer. It features sounds of tropical house meshed with soft, mellow vocals, sending you on a breezy trip. Undoubtedly catchy in sound, while still maintaining its tropical feel, you will imagine yourself flying in the sky.

If you’re wondering what all the MOMOLAND hype is all about, then you better believe this is where you start. Even if you didn’t buy into the dabs that came with their last release, this is the EP that changes everything. With a release this GREAT!, one can only anticipate where and what these girls will be doing next. I’ve got MOMO-fever, guys.

MUST-LISTEN: 뿜뿜, Same Same
